Yes, That's a great way to describe it. Imagine that you a guest in a hotel in an unfamiliar city and you have some spare time to experience your surroundings. One way to maximize the experience is to consult the hotel's concierge who - after asking a few questions about your preferences, budget and time - will make recommendations and connect you with venues, services and transportation. That's sort of what I do, but for people who want my expertise on their home project experience, not their travel experience.
Excellent question. My fee is based on the amount of work required for the project to be managed efficiently. Some who do what I do choose to bill hourly. I don't bill hourly because I think it takes the emphasis off of quality and places it on quantity. So you and I will determine the fee together and factor it into your overall budget for the project so that it can be paid incrementally on extended projects. And there a no hidden fees.
That's another great question. My clients count on me to ONLY recommend licensed and insured tradespeople, craftspeople, service providers and wholesalers. So those are the professionals who will work on your project.
"Then what" depends on what you've contracted me to do. Some clients only want the recommendations and connections, and then they're good to go. Most clients, though, want me to manage the work on their behalf, to lessen the inconvenience and annoyance that home improvement projects are known for. We'll outline the level of my involvement at the beginning of our relationship.
It's probably more a question of want than need. I think that for a project with lots of moving parts, almost everyone needs someone to navigate red tape and scheduling and permits etc. So the question becomes "do you want one." If the answer is yes, the question then becomes how do I fit it in the budget." Call me and I'll help you figure that out.
